Kpop Music Video: Day 11
Only One by BoA under SM Entertainment
After watching all these boy and girl bands, it’s sometimes hard to remember that Korea has a ton of good solo artists. BoA’s real name is Kwon Bo-a (Kwon is their family name, making Bo-a her “first” name). After stylizing her name as BoA, fans made acronyms that fit, my favorite being “Best of Asia”. She is 26 years old in American years, however she would be 28 in Korea, since Korean’s start at age 1 and gain a year at every New Years. Her birthday is in November so she’s extra old in Korea. She has released albums in Korean, Japanese and English and has released singles in Mandarin Chinese. Fans also call her the Queen of Kpop.
I see BoA as Korea’s version of Janet Jackson, particularly because she is still very relevant in her 13th year releasing singles, and because of her excellent dancing skills. I love to use this song as an example of this because SM decided to split up her music video into a drama music video, which is the video shown at the top and a dance music video. Just by view count it’s easy to see which one the fans like more. She’s energetic and has powerful dance moves as opposed to the “hey look I’m sexy” dance moves, which to me is very sexy. I am also a HUGE fan of the diversity in her backup dancer cast. While watching kpop has got me more accustomed to the variation in Korean body types and facial features, it’s nice to see people of different ethnicity in a kpop video. Be sure to check out her awesome dance moves.
With BoA releasing new singles in 2013, I think it’s a good thing to know who she is and what she does. Even though this isn’t an older single that shows where she came from, it thoroughly shows what BoA’s talents are and why she deserves to be talked about and not be forgotten in the sea of Kpop groups.
